Excavation pits & pile foundations

550 Frankipiles NG East Side Mall, Berlin.

A shopping centre, the East Side Mall – a major construction project financed with 200 million Euros from the FREO Group – is being built in downtown Berlin, directly between the Warschauer Brücke and Mercedes-Benz-Arena. Designed in a futuristic style by Dutch architect Ben van Berkel, the shopping mall is set to primarily attract younger people, with up to 120 shops over three levels. Once opened in autumn 2018, visitors will be able to access the mall directly from the Warschauer Brücke on the ground floor via a specially constructed 50-m-wide platform.

Outgunning the competition with a special proposal
In March 2016, FRANKI was contracted by Züblin AG to lay pile foundations. In doing so, we had outgunned our competitors, who had offered a foundation based on Fundex or large bored piles. FRANKI submitted a special solution, proposing foundations based on Frankipiles NG. This reduces the number of piles, and results in huge savings. FRANKI was supported by isg, which took charge of planning and conducting structural analyses of the piles.
From May to September 2016, FRANKI drove almost 550 piles, measuring between 12 and 15 metres in length. The foundation soil consists of fills, six metres of loosely layered sand, and medium-density layers of sand from depths of around nine metres onwards. Groundwater is present three metres below the surface.

Soil liquefaction from driving vibrations
The driving vibrations resulted in soil liquefaction, preventing the number of hits required to drive in the piles. As such, a new test load with new driving criteria was applied. The load-bearing capacities were successfully demonstrated, and piles manufactured without precompacted gravel.
The planned construction time frame was ten weeks. Construction was delayed as a result of the building site being located near an eye clinic, which uses highly shock-sensitive lasers. Modified construction times were thus arranged to enable both parties to work. We would like to take this opportunity to once again thank all staff employed on the construction site, who put up with considerable scheduling changes and did a fantastic job..
